A Guide to Choosing Maternity Jeans
Every woman needs a great pair of jeans. That fact doesn't change just because your figure is in flux. A great pair of jeans makes you feel great about how you look. Choosing your jeans can be daunting with some many to choose from. This guide aims to help you decide on 'Waist Style', Size, Leg Style and that all important price.
The Maternity Jean 'Waist Cut'
As you might expect, it is the waist 'fit or cut' that differentiates your maternity jeans from a regular pair. There are six main waist fittings that determine a maternity 'cut or fit':
- On the Bump - Front Only Waist Band - An on the bump fit offering a low to mid waist band around the front of your trousers for medium bump support.
- On the Bump - Full Waist Band - An on the bump fit offering a low to mid waist band around the entire waist for medium bump support. It is a great comfort choice for keeping your jeans in position on your hips, particularly for Mums who do a lot of bending down!
- Over the Bump High Rise Belly Band - A full over the bump fit offers a full sized elastic bump band that rises to just below the breast. In your first trimester you may find it hard to believe that the bump band could be filled to full capacity! Most bands are designed to be folded in half during the early weeks and extended as your bump reaches epic proportions!
- Over the Bump - Mid Rise Belly Band - A variation on the full over the bump fit, this slightly slimmer version offers a medium sized elasticated bump band that rises to just above your belly button. As with the full bump band, this can be folded down in the first months of pregnancy, although is usually comfortable as is.
- Under the Bump - Adjustable - An under the bump fit sits just below your bump and is usually accompanied by a draw string mechanism in the waist band, that allows the trousers to be drawn in or let out according to your bump size.
- Under the Bump - Elasticated - An under the bump fit sits just below your bump and is usually accompanied by a draw string mechanism in the waist band, that allows the trousers to be drawn in or let our according to your bump size. In this variety extra comfort is added in the form of stretchy side panels, fabric that will grow and stretch along with you.
The Maternity Jean Size
As a rule of thumb, you should purchase your pre-pregnancy size when choosing maternity wear. Maternity clothes are sized a little more generously than your regular fit allowing you plenty of room to grow.
The Maternity Jean Leg Style
Shopping for your pregnancy shape is extremely difficult. If you are lucky enough to be 'all bump', congratulations! If your body is in flux, here are some hints and tips to help you make that decision:
1. Boot Cut - Tailored or wider leg trousers are perfectly suited to the apple / pear shape. They lengthen your legs giving good balance with your top half. Conversely, if you naturally lack curves, jeans with back pockets and styles with flare or boot cut legs create the illusion of curves and a rounder bottom. Unfortunately boot cut can make a shorter leg appear shorter.
2. Skinny - A super fashion statement and suitable for both the straight up and down and the super curvey shape. A great option for the petite figure, skinny cuts will lengthen the leg.
3. Straight Leg - For the hour glass, curvy figure, fitted jeans will beautifully accentuate your curves. Ultra-tapered styles work by bringing hips and thighs into proportion. Again straight cuts will lengthen the leg.
4. Jegging - If you have lumps and bumps in all the wrong places, these might not be the maternity trouser for you. Weigh this up with the outstanding comfort provided by soft stretchy fabric - in your last trimester this will be important to you.
5. Boyfriend and Dungarees - Wider leg trousers are perfectly suited to the apple / pear shape / plus size. Quite a casual look, these styles are great for skimming lumps and bumps, enhancing your bottom! Note, they should appear baggy and may cling to bigger thighs!
6. Denim Patterns - Vertical lines down the length of your trousers help to slim the thighs and can create the illusion of length on the shorter leg.

As the owner of Just Maternity Jeans, I'd love to share my experience here. For my first pregnancy I didn't really know what I was looking for and didn't have the time to research. I bought a few pairs of jeans, mostly from the largest high street mother and baby retailers. Unfortunately they were near useless for baby number two, with the bump band stitching unravelling, not to mention the baggy knees! Second time around I vowed to invest a little more and was pleased with the result.
Consider the following when deciding on your price:
1. How often will I wear a pair of maternity jeans? On a day to day basis, are you a serial jeans wearer or are they simply an occasional wear item. Consider how many pregnancies the jeans be required for!
2. How long after the birth of my child will I require my maternity jeans? For some this can be a fast transition back to regular jeans, for others it can take months.
3. How important to me is it, to look and feel great at this moment in my life? It is true, a great pair of jeans makes you feel great about how you look.

Why are skinny jeans for men more expensive then regular jeans?
Also why are they less available- I went in department stores in the mall and they had the smallest selection of skinny jeans not to mention they cost more.
It seems odd that they have so few in stock when they are supposedly in fashion.
If you really want to wear skinny jeans.... just wear women's if you cannot find men's
