Euro coins from the Vatican
The Vatican has signed an agreement in 2001 with the monetary Italian state giving it the right to use the euro. The Vatican is an independent and sovereign state - despite his small size - so it can beat its own currency, which, under monetary agreements with the European Union, can be used legally in all countries of the Euro zone.
If the coins from the Vatican have legal tender and can be used for buying common things, it is very unlikely that you find in your portfolio back to the store! These coins are indeed issued in limited numbers - in two boxes containing a copy of the eight euro coins - and collectors would ofter never let someone remove them from the box, because there is risk of damaging them and reducing their value. These boxes are distinguished by the quality of minting coins, the presence or absence of a silver medal and the quality of packaging:
- Set "Fleur de coin", issued 85 000 copies, sold 30 Euros by the shop of the Vatican. These parts are of higher quality than parts that are found in circulation, since many of them are struck with worn corners that affect the fineness of their hits. - Set "Belle épreuve ", issued 16 000 copies, sold 140 Euros by the shop of the Vatican. A currency minted in "Belle épreuve " includes coins specially designed for collectors, with flanks usually specially machined. They are handled with extreme care and placed in a sealed case immediately after they are made. The other set of interest is that its packaging is more luxurious, and it contains a commemorative silver coin.
The history of the Vatican Euros is still young and has yet to three different series, except for commemorative coins of two Euro detailed below.
From 2001 to 2005, the coins were minted in the likeness of Jean Paul II. It is estimated that there were about 2 500 000 coins, which makes them rare and sought after.
During the vacancy in 2005 by Jean Paul II and Benoit XVI, the coins were minted with the arms of Cardinal Chamberlain, and acting with the words "Sede Vacante". These coins are rare and highly sought after by collectors. From 2006, the coins represent the new Pope Benoit XVI.
Since 2004, the Vatican issues every year a piece of commemorative 2 Euros:
- 2004: 75 th anniversary of the founding of the state of the Vatican .
- 2005: 20 th World Youth Day, which took place in Cologne. 100 000 coins.
- 2006: 500 years of the Swiss Guard. 100 000 coins.
- 2007: 80 years of Benoit XVI. 100 000 coins.
- 2008: Year of Saint Paul. 106 000 coins.
These coins are usually sold at a rate of approximately 14 Euros by the shop and left the Vatican generally very quickly given the very small number of coins issued. These coins have legal tender and so can be used for buying your bread at the grocery, but again they are bought and sold much more than their nominal value,so it is unlikely that you will find them by accident.
The Vatican also issues annual collector coins in silver or gold with a face value of 5, 10, 20, 50 or 100 Euros. These parts doesn't have legal tender and their value is so purely indicative. They are generally sold at an higher price in the Vatican's shop, and reach an even higher price when numismatics sell them.
